If you are comfortable, you are not learning

I remember the days when I was learning Korean through an app. I thought it was amazing that I reached 1000 words. I celebrated my mini win but after a while I realise that something was missing. It was not until I changed my learning routine to focus on making a sentence that I finally felt uncomfortable. That was when learning actually took place.

I recently read a book Game Changers by Joan Medeiros. There was a quote in there by an athlete:

The athlete needs to be constantly adapting new ways of dealing with the game, with opponents. It’s uncomfortable, but that’s how we learn.

This also suggests that when I’m comfortable, e.g. learning Korean from an app, I wasn’t actually learning. I will need to seek out more uncomfortable situations to really learn Korean, like speaking to a Korean! This will be my next goal.
